Working effectively with public contributors webinar proves a hit with attendees
6 November 2023
More than 170 people came along to our webinar on working effectively with public contributors on 31 October. Attendees heard from four ARC West public contributors with more than 20 years of experience between them.
In feedback, 96% of respondents were either satisfied or very satisfied with the event. A similar number said the content was relevant to their needs.
Representing our adult public contributors we had Sarah and Louise, who spoke passionately about their experiences and included lots of useful advice.
Alex and Ella, members of our Young People’s Advisory Group, also took time out of their busy college and university days to speak. They reflected on some of the projects they’ve been involved in and ended with some top tips for researchers.
The idea for the event came from work led by Sarah and Louise. They’ve created guidance and a diagram on how to involve public contributors more effectively in research.
Sarah Biggs has developed a new written guide to working effectively with public contributors. The guide is aimed at researchers and is available on the ARC West website.
Louise Ting has created a diagram explaining how PPI can support and enhance the research process. It is aimed at both researchers and public contributors alike and is available on the ARC West website and Flickr.
Louise said:
“It was great to be able to share our real life experiences on what good PPI looks like, including tips from the guide and the diagram.
“I’m also pleased I could give advice on how to make such work more inclusive as this is so important for reducing health inequalities.”
Some of the responses to our feedback form include:
Brilliant to hear from such eloquent, informed PPI contributors – those with experience and the young people alike.
Honestly, the young people presenting were absolutely brilliant. They spoke directly and with such clarity it was incredibly powerful. I wish I could share it with any young people who might be struggling to find their voice- it was so powerful.
This was just the right balance of information and opportunity to ask questions, presented in a relaxed and relevant way.
I found the webinar really useful as I start my PhD research project and has cemented my desire to work with a PPI group. Thank you to everyone involved.
