Dr Peter Brindle has joined CLAHRC West to lead our cross-cutting evaluation theme. He will also work with healthcare commissioners to help them play as full a role as possible in CLAHRC West. Peter’s overriding interest is in finding better ways of making the NHS as evidence-informed as possible to enhance patients’ health and their experience of the NHS, while reducing waste.
Peter has been a GP in Bristol since 1999, while also holding a number of research leadership roles. He started his research career and obtained his MD as a Wellcome Fellow and, following the launch of the Primary Care Research Network South West, he was the north hub director for four years and then the director of the South West Dementia and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network for a further three years.
From December 2010 to July 2015 he was the Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group clinical lead for dementia. In February 2014 he became the leader for commissioning evidence informed care for the West of England Academic Health Science Network.
He is a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) advisory board, the NIHR systematic reviews programme advisory group and the NIHR health technology assessment primary care and community and preventive interventions panel. Peter is also a member of the Bristol Health Partners executive group and chairs the CLAHRC West research advisory panel.
On his appointment, Peter said: “I am passionate about helping the NHS find answers to address its many challenges. That’s why I am so excited about joining the NIHR CLAHRC West to help deliver its busy programme of applied health research and to build connections with the wider NHS.”
Director of CLAHRC West, Professor Jenny Donovan said: “I am delighted that Peter has joined us to lead on these very important areas. Peter is a perfect fit for the NIHR CLAHRC West, being exceptionally well connected locally and nationally in commissioning, research and knowledge mobilisation.”
