The impact of policy changes to gluten-free food prescriptions

Research summary

Some clinical commissioning groups have already brought in full or partial bans on GPs prescribing gluten-free foods to people with coeliac disease, and the Department of Health and Social Care has introduced policies to limit prescriptions to certain gluten-free items. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the potential impact of policy changes on patients and NHS spending.

Many homeless people drink heavily and don’t eat enough. Advice on preventing malnutrition is often unsuitable for homeless people, who have no cooking facilities and little money. To find the best way to tackle this problem, we reviewed the findings of research studies on this topic.

Interventions to reduce the effects of financial hardship on depression and anxiety

Research summary

Economic recession leads to more unemployment, debt, depression and suicide. Our systematic review found that job clubs appear to be effective in reducing depression in people who lose their jobs, particularly those at high risk of depression. Evidence for other forms of support is limited.

Research summary

Eye injection drugs recommended by NICE cost the NHS up to £447 million a year, but could be replaced by an unlicensed drug costing as much as ten times less. Use of the licensed drugs has increased three-fold over the last five years, with some parts of England treating five times as many patients as others.

The Staff Participation Engagement and Communication application (SPEaC-app), also known as Happy App by staff from University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UH Bristol), collects real-time, work-related mood feedback. CLAHRC West was research and evaluation partner on the project to develop and roll out the app across the trust.
